- Dupuytren’s disease is a benign thickening of the fascia/fibrous tissue under the skin of the palm
- No-one knows what causes it, and there is no known treatment that can prevent it getting worse
- Sometimes it gets worse quickly, sometimes it takes many years
- As the tissue tightens, the finger is pulled into the palm
- The main criteria for surgery is whether the hand can be placed flat on the table. If it cannot, then surgery to cut out the cord is an option
- It is important to know that the Dupuytren’s can come back even once it is cut out
