- Occurs when the ligament across the wrist becomes thickened and pinches/compresses the main (median) nerve running underneath it
- This causes pain / tingling / burning / numbness – initially at night but then during the day as well when gripping with that hand
- If the symptoms continue for too long they can cause permanent nerve damage
- First treatment is a wrist splint to hold the wrist straight at night
- If this doesn’t reverse the symptoms, then sometimes a steroid injection can be considered
- The best long term option to treat CTS is a small surgery to release the ligament and take the pressure off the nerve
